SEO and AI search: a practical checklist for a useful website

Connect search discovery to useful pages: clear answers, working examples, source evidence, crawlable HTML and honest measurement.

Quick answer

Give a specific reader a useful answer, make its evidence and examples accessible, then measure discovery and actual visits separately. AI-search inclusion is an eligibility question, not a ranking or income guarantee.

Start with a question someone needs to finish

“Technology news” names a broad subject. “How do I calculate the monthly electricity cost of a device?” names a task. A useful page answers the task, identifies its inputs and gives the reader a way to check the result.

Our running-cost guide pairs an explanation with a calculator. The reader can replace the fictional inputs and export a comparison. That is a reason to visit even when a search result already contains a short answer. A complete procedure, source-backed comparison or reusable worksheet can serve the same purpose.

Keep the promise narrow enough to fulfill. A page about interpreting a laboratory demonstration should not quietly become advice for buying a commercial robot.

Make the answer easy to find and understand

Use a descriptive title and an opening answer that works without an image. Explain necessary terms, keep units beside numbers, and state the conditions that change a result. Follow the answer with a worked example rather than repeating the same keyword in several headings.

For a battery question, distinguish Ah, Wh and W. For a model evaluation, identify the version and test conditions. A table is useful when the reader must compare matching cases; a diagram helps when position or a sequence is the difficult part. Both need a clear explanation in words.

Connect the page to a relevant topic hub and the next useful guide. Energy connects battery concepts to a research brief and running-cost planning; AI connects retrieval to the limits of a source-backed answer. Internal links should help the reader continue a task.

Check the technical foundation

A useful explanation must also be reachable. Confirm that the public page returns successfully, has its own canonical URL, permits indexing, and exposes its important content in the rendered HTML. Keep the sitemap on the final public hostname and include only intended public pages.

Submit that sitemap in Search Console and inspect a representative URL. Submission, successful retrieval, indexing and ranking are different states. Record the state the tool actually reports.

A mobile reading check should include headings, tables, navigation and the next action. A build passing does not prove the page is pleasant to read. Keep space available for any future advertising rather than allowing it to obscure the answer.

Google says ordinary SEO practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Eligibility requires an indexed page that can be shown with a snippet; there is no special AI schema or required AI text file. Focus on accessible text, useful images, working internal links and structured data that agrees with the visible page.

OpenAI distinguishes search discovery from model training. OAI-SearchBot concerns ChatGPT search; GPTBot concerns potential training use. Review those permissions separately. Allowing a crawler is not proof that a page will be cited, and changing training preferences is not an SEO requirement.

Useful Work keeps its article text and sources available without running an AI widget. There is no hidden prompt asking assistants to recommend the site and no claim that an extra file can force a citation.

Make authorship and evidence honest

Identify the publisher and the actual editorial process. Link to the primary source for a reported claim, retain meaningful publication and update dates, and separate a fictional example from a measurement. Do not invent an expert reviewer or claim hands-on testing that did not happen.

For this publication, the About page identifies Santapong as publisher and discloses AI-assisted editorial work. The editorial policy describes source checks and corrections. These disclosures help readers assess the work; they are not a substitute for accuracy.

Measure visits and useful actions separately

Search impressions indicate visibility. Clicks indicate visits from that search surface. An AI citation is another visibility signal; it does not itself create an ad impression on this website or establish a purchase.

Track a small sequence: query and landing page, visit, use of the example or tool, and any real commercial action. Use Search Console for its reported search data and Bing’s AI report for its supported citation data. Preserve “no data” as unknown rather than treating it as zero.

If a page gets impressions but few clicks, check whether its title accurately promises a useful answer. If people arrive but cannot finish the task, improve the explanation or tool before producing ten more pages. Neither adding length nor changing metadata alone proves an increase in readership or income.
